MANE Events – Twist Out Tutorial

I do not think I reinvent myself. Wearing my hair differently or changing my style of dress is playing dress-up. I don’t take it too seriously. –Mariah Carey
And now… the moment we all have been waiting for: A MANE EVENT!  This will be my FIRST hair tutorial for the masses.  I probably get the most requests for this particular style, so I decided to share my products and techniques with everyone! So if you want your hair to look like this:

Twist Out Tutorial
Products I use:
Perm Rods (Blue)

Shea Butter
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel (FOTE)
Jojoba oil
Giovanni Direct Leave In

I start on freshly washed and detangled hair.  I put the leave-in in my hair first.  Starting from the back, I grab a medium sized amount of hair. I section off some hair, get a pea size amount of shea butter and emulsify it in my hands so that I can apply it to my hair.  I then add a small amount of FOTE, make sure it’s totally blended in with my shea butter, run my fingers through my curls and I twist.  While twisting, I use the “grab and go” method because I do not like for my parts to show (and it is easier to hide them when I do that). I probably have about 20-25 twist in my hair when I finish (medium-sized).  Once all twists are complete, I let my hair air dry for about 15 minutes, and then I use the perm rods (you can get those at Sally’s for cheap) to rod set the twists.  Once all the rods are in and secure, I then wrap my hair up and go to sleep…
In the AM, I take out the rollers first, then the twists (make sure the twists are COMPLETELY DRY).  With a pea size amount of Jojoba oil in my hands, I pat my hands over each twist, and then separate the twists to my liking. If I want my hair to be bigger, I will use a shot of heat from the blow dryer to lengthen my roots (if doing this style in the summer months, be mindful of the heat outside. The heat will make your hair more than grow larger more than likely, so you may want to skip this step) You may also opt to use a pick or some sort (i.e. comb, fingers, etc.), but ONLY FOCUS ON THE ROOTS (you don’t want to disturb your curls). And VOILA! You have a curly twist out!
To maintain, I will either just sleep on it (I have a satin pillow case) or I will “pineapple” it at night (loose ponytail at the top of my head).  Misting a small amount of water will add moisture and make it easier to manipulate as well, but is not really necessary if your have properly moisturized your hair initially.  In the mornings, I am able to just fluff my hair and go!  The style usually lasts about 5-7 days.
Whatever you do, learn what works for YOUR hair.  My products may not be ideal for your results.  If you have a product you like – stick to it!  No one knows your hair better than you! I learned my hair doesn’t need thousands of products to work… the simplest things work for me.  J  Hope that helps.  Leave comments below!
