How did your natural hair journey begin?
My journey was sort of an accident. I was a poor broke college student and couldn’t afford to get a relaxer! A few of my friends were already natural so after about 6 months without a relaxer I decided “Hey, why not?” I was going to graduate college soon and figured new hair would go well with my new chapter in life. Six years later I’m still natural!

How, better than anyone, do you describe your hair?
My hair is a 3C – curly in the back and on one side, wavy on the other side and doing whatever it wants in the middle!

Three hair products you can’t live without. Go.
It’s hard for me to pick just three because I’m a product JUNKIE! But, I could never and will never live without Kinky Curly Knot Today – BEST detangler ever, Cantu Leave In Conditioning Cream – great for a co-wash, curly fro/ponytail, twistout, and anything else, and Shea Moisture Curl Milk – always refreshes old hair and brings it back to life!

What is your current hair care/styling regimen? Any special treatments?
I usually wear my hair in a twist-out. It’s easy to do, lasts for days, and give me a natural style while still looking “professional”.

I use the co-wash-co method: I apply conditioner (usually Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Cream Conditioner), comb through with my Tangle Teezer, then wash just my scalp with Kinky Curly Come Clean and/or Shea Moisture African Black Soap Shampoo (my scalp is Sahara desert dry) and/or Shea Moisture Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. I rinse then condition with Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Cream and/or Shea Moisture African Black Soap Condition and/or Shea Moisture Shea Butter Moisture Retention Conditioner and rinse again.  At this point I detangle with my fingers. While wet I’ll apply Olive Oil (like the kind you cook with) to my scalp. I apply Kinky Curly Knot Today and a little Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I’ll put one pump of Kinky Curly Perfectly Polished on my ends. Then I grab sections and start two strand twisting with a tiny bit of Kinky Curly Curling Custard on my fingers.
When I’m finished I may rub a little Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Oil over my hair. While still twisted I’ll let it air dry for a day or more depending on the look I want. The wetter my hair when I take the twists out the bigger my hair will be. I twist them each night and sleep in a satin bonnet. After about a week they start looking old and I retwist with Shea Moisture Curling Souffle and I get another week or so out of my hair!
I deep condition once every three months with Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Masque or Deep Treatment Hair Masque.
For my dry scalp, I wash with Apple Cider Vinegar about once every two or three months.

There may be some readers who aspire to take the plunge into the natural hair world. Any words of wisdom?
To anyone thinking about being natural – JUST DO IT! I LOVE being natural! It takes more work and time than I ever thought it would but it is ALWAYS worth it! My hair has NEVER been healthier. Stick with it because it may not always be easy but it’s an amazing journey. There are so many products and resources available now that weren’t available when I first started my journey. And everywhere you look there is another natural sister willing to give you advice. Also, love YOUR hair. I had to get over my hair envy and accept MY hair and what works for MY hair. Lastly, natural hair is not meant to “look perfect.” It’s art. It’s an expression of you….so I always think the bigger the better!!
